# Common questions
Is ESPFlight a finished commercial drone kit?
No. ESPFlight is an open platform with firmware, a hardware reference, documentation, and a companion application.
Which versions should I use for v1?
Firmware v1.0.0, Hardware Reference v1.0, Application v1.0.0, and Protocol 2.
Can I change the Hardware Reference?
Yes. It is an open hardware starting point. Hardware changes may require matching firmware/configuration changes and fresh validation.
Do I need the VL53L0X?
No for ordinary manual flight. It is optional for the supported altitude-assist path.
Why must I test without propellers first?
It lets you validate wiring, IMU direction, motor mapping, ARM/DISARM, and failsafe behavior without creating unnecessary propeller risk.
Can I use public Wi-Fi for flight control?
The v1 transport is intended for a trusted private local network. Do not rely on it as hostile-network transport.
